Interspacial Dating: A FLASH SCI-FI ROMANCE

SYNOPSIS: When a new race of beings move to her planet, Monica wants to be one of the first to date one of them.

“I hate it when you look at me like that.” Shelby chuckled. “What is it?”

“So…I might as well go ahead and break the news to you.”

“Oh my god, what have you done now, Monica?”

“I set up a date with an older Saturnian man. For tonight.” I giggled and Shelby picked up one of my pillows and threw it at me.

“I can’t believe you’re just now telling me this! You are losing best friend points, girl.”

“My bad my bad. It was all so sudden. He’s been hitting me up on messenger for like a week now. Girl he has two houses. One on Saturn and one on Neptune.”

Shelby raised her eyebrows. “Shit—that’s hella rare for Neptunian men—go for it sis. You might just make me a believer.”

After a few moments of silence Shelby’s face beamed. “Well if you’re going to do this nonsense Monica—at least let me help you prepare. Sit here so we can do something with this head.” I sat down in front of her and she rubbed something that smelled like glue into my head so I wrinkled my nose.

“The heck is that stuff?” I said.

“Don’t worry about it.” She continued mashing the white goo into my head and I leaned forward in pain. “We gotta do what we gotta do. There’s no way he’s gonna like this hair.”

I hadn’t thought about it—but maybe she was right. You couldn’t really see my natural blue coils on the dating app so my date really only knew what my face looked like, not my hair. From the pictures I had seen, Saturnians had neat hair. My endlessly tangled rollercoaster of blue kinks on my head might scare him away. I bit my nails.

Shelby beat on my head with a pink smoothing brush to try to get my hair to lay down and look more like the Saturnians, but it wasn’t working. As Neptunians, our hair stretched up so high, one of my human friends from Earth once called me a “Who from Who-Ville.” To this day I still had no idea what that meant and I was too afraid to look it up.

My heart raced. “I have to meet him in less than an hour, Shelb.”

She jumped up and down. “I know what to do. I’ll be back in less than ten minutes. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before.”

She came back in the room with a bag with a stringy purple wig in it. The hair was long and flat; it looked just like the Saturnians’ hair.

“It smells like plastic,” I laughed. I held the wig in my hand and I didn’t know if I was more nervous about him seeing my real hair, or about being discovered as a fraud on this date. I sighed and put it on and it finally laid flat on my head after many tries. Shelby curled the wig for me and I walked out front where my date’s royal blue spacecraft was parked.

I didn’t know we were gonna travel through space. Saturnians really were fancy. NeptunIan dudes usually just took you around the corner to a basic restaurant. I tugged at the wig nervously as I got into the spaceship. As soon as I got in I was hit with a heavenly smell like lavender and rose hips. His spaceship was freakishly clean and had golden leather seats.

“Buckle up,” he said. His face was stern and hard to read, just like most Saturnians. They were a serious, hard-working group of people, which honestly was what made me so interested in them; I could use some of that energy. I swallowed and put my seatbelt on.

“I’m Charles.” He stuck out his hand to me. This felt more business than personal, but I stuck my hand out and shook his hand anyway.

“I’m Monica,” I said.

“You ever dated a Saturnian?” He asked as he pressed a silver button. When he pressed it, the top of the craft lifted up and back, and lights filled the area above us like our own little solar system over our heads. Oh goodness this is so cool.

“Um—no. I haven’t. Never dated a Saturnian.” I pressed on my head again because the wig was making my head throb. I tried to be subtle when I needed to adjust the wig, but I caught his eyes looking at my head more than a few times during the ride, which made my heart race uncontrollably. Could he see me fucking with this thing on my head?

He turned on some music and I shifted in my seat while I listened to the gentle melodies. After we rode for a while I got curious. “Are we going to your planet?”

He smiled. “You bet. I wanted to broaden your horizons.”

My hands trembled as I toyed with the armrest. I had never left Neptune before and I didn’t realize we would be doing all of this. Usually it would have taken eons to get to Saturn but with his modern spacecraft, we could get there in less than an hour.

We pulled up to a tower taller than any building I’d ever seen. The architecture was insane and nothing like the buildings back in Neptune.

I felt like a little kid. “Wow.” I stared up at the building and he chuckled at me.

The building was orange with silver detailing. Some people sat outside in these little boxes and orbited the restaurant like they were on a really slow roller coaster, and I could smell the food seeping from the place and it smelled unlike anything I’d ever consumed.

The Saturnian women were really pretty; they were tall with long purple hair just like the wig Shelby had put on me.

I felt my wig slipping back so I shoved it back into place before we got out of the craft. Charles came around to open my door and glanced at my hair again then we walked into the restaurant. Does he hate it or what? Why does he keep looking at my hair like that?

We took our seat and before I could get a good look at the menu he said something that caught me off guard.

“Are you full Neptunain?” His eyes found my head again.

I made a weird face. “Yeah…I am.” I chuckled and watched him stare at my head again.

“Ok,” He said.

Truth be told, I was so uncomfortable with this thing on my head. His stare certainly didn’t help. My scalp itched, and it was hot. I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I felt like if I didn’t do what I was bout to do—this date would have been a crash and burn. I took a deep breath.

“Look. Charles,” I said.

He looked up from his menu and his yellow eyes penetrated me. “Yes?”

I slowly pulled the wig off of my head and watched him grin.

He banged the table with a huge grin on his face.

“What a relief—yes, Monica. You are fucking gorgeous naturally, just like I thought.” He grabbed my hand. “And you know what? If you’re into the wig thing I’m fine with that. You look good either way. But—just know—I know what Neptunians look like—and that was exactly what I wanted.”

I pulled out a small mirror and looked at my kinky blue ringlets that stretched towards the sky and I couldn’t wait to tell Shelby about this. Charles grabbed my hands across the table. “Monica; I’m so glad to be here with you.”

I couldn’t form any words so I just batted my eyes at him. I was so taken aback, because for the first time, I finally I felt beautiful and wanted, just for being myself.
